Man charged in shooting near elementary school

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A man was arrested in connection to a shooting that prompted a nearby elementary school to heighten security.

Tyron Wilcox, 35, was taken into custody at 1 p.m. Thursday, according to Louisville Metro Police Department spokeswoman Alicia Smiley.

Smiley said Wilcox was in a verbal argument with the victim in the 4200 block of Wheeler Avenue when he fired a shot that hit the victim in the head, shoulder and back around 12:46 p.m.

The victim was transported to University of Louisville Hospital with injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening.

Nearby Hazelwood Elementary School operated on its elevated security level Thursday afternoon as a precautionary measure during the incident.

Wilcox was booked into the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections and charged with assault and tampering with physical evidence.

Investigators have not recovered the weapon.
