LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Investigators have determined that an electrical problem started a fire that damaged or destroyed eight apartments and displaced 33 people.
The fire was reported in the 2200 block of James Pirtle Court just before 4 p.m. Monday. The first fire crews to reach the scene reported a heavy volume of fire coming from the attic of the two story building, which contained 16 apartments.

It took the 52 firefighters called to the scene 40 minutes to bring the fire under control. Arson investigators said a malfunctioning electrical outlet on a second floor balcony was the cause of the fire.
Of the eight apartments involved, four were left with major fire damage while the other four sustained smoke and water damage. Damage to the property is estimated at $450,000.
Property managers are working to relocate displaced residents to other apartments.
