Louisville Metro Animal Services offers adoption specials after shelter reaches capacity

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Louisville Metro Animal Services is busting at the seams as more animals show up at the city-run shelter.

That means “urgent need” dogs like Ronnie, who was at Tuesday’s news conference, are in danger of being put down to make more room. Metro leaders say intakes are up 17% this year, from the same period in 2023.

Mayor Greenberg is urging pet owners to spay and neuter and make sure their dog is microchipped.

“We also need to encourage people not to get a pet if they’re not committed to that animal for the long term,” Greenberg said. “It’s a job, it is work. There is a real responsibility in having a pet. So we encourage people to not even begin that journey if they’re not committed to it for the long term.”

LMAS is offering free adoptions for most large-breed pets. Adopters also get a free “good pup” training session.

The city is also looking for foster families, to help alleviate the overcrowding at the shelter.
