HEBRON, CT (WFSB/Gray News) - Officials say a 14-year-old died in a dirt bike crash in Hebron, Connecticut on Sunday afternoon.

State police said the victim was identified as 14-year-old Erik Brooker, a freshman at RHAM High School.

The accident happened in the area of Burnt Hill and Cone roads around 5:25 p.m.

Police say Brooker failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the bike. The bike traveled off the road and struck a rocky embankment. The rider was then thrown from the dirt bike.

Brooker suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment but later died.

Regional School District 8 superintendent Colin McNamara sent a letter to the RHAM community on Monday.

“It is with deep sadness that I share the tragic news of the death of Erik Brooker, a freshman at RHAM High School, who passed away after being involved in a dirt bike accident yesterday. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Erik’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

We know that this loss will be felt throughout our entire school community and affect students, staff, and families in different ways, and our goal is to ensure that students and staff have access to the supports they need. Additional support services are in place at both RHAM Middle School and RHAM High School, as administrators and school counseling staff are working in close collaboration with AHM Youth and Family Services to ensure that everyone’s needs are being met. In addition, therapy dogs will be present at both schools to offer comfort and companionship for those who may find it helpful. We encourage families to talk with your child(ren) and to reach out to school counseling staff directly if they are struggling.

We are committed to supporting one another through this difficult time and thank you for your compassion and understanding."

A GoFundMe has been created to support the family.
