British medical manufacturer brings surgical glove maker to Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A British medical manufacturing company is opening its North American Headquarters for GLVUS (pronounced glove-U.S.) in Louisville. The move represents a $5.8 million investment with plans to create 200 jobs in 10 years manufacturing surgical gloves.
“At some point everybody in America, everybody in Kentucky is going to end up in the hospital getting care from a doctor,” Democratic Representative Morgan McGarvey of Kentucky’s Third Congressional District, said after the announcement. “These are the high-quality gloves that our doctors and surgeons use in taking care of people.”
With the announcement, Louisville steps onto a global stage, competing for the attention of the expanding medical manufacturing industry. It brings opportunities for jobs ranging from quality control and logistics to maintenance and packaging.
“Not just surgical gloves, but also pharmaceuticals, medical devices,” Republican Representative James Comer (Ky. 1st District) said. “I think you’re going to see more announcements like this all across America and I’m glad Louisville was the first. This is a big deal.”
A big deal because it not only checks off a politically popular box by bringing manufacturing back to the U.S., it also bolsters the nation’s medical supply chain that could not keep up with demand during the pandemic.
Mayor Craig Greenberg foresees GLVUS collaborating with local hospitals to develop more products in the future.
“And now we are building a growing ecosystem of companies that are re-shoring products and strengthening America’s supply chain,” Greenberg said. “Louisville is taking the lead and part of that is thanks to this glove US investment.”
