LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - LMPD investigators are reporting an unusual trend in car break-ins in the Highlands.

In the last seven days, robbers have hit at least 30 cars in areas around Bardstown Road and Eastern Parkway. But instead of robbing unlocked cars, the thieves have been breaking in windows.

"This week we saw something a little bit different," Lt. James Cirillo said. "I believe we had 13, that the window was broken or some type of forced entry occurred."

Cirillo said if a thief wants to get in your car, he'll typically find a way to do so, but there are ways you can make yourself less vulnerable.

"Put valuables in the trunk," Cirillo said. "You may want to do that before you get to your location because someone (might be) casing the lot and see you put something in the trunk," Cirillo said.

There's also another school of thinking -- why bother locking your car at all?

"I've heard that rationale that some people believe they'd rather let them get in there car than have to deal with a broken window," Cirillo said.

But is that a good idea?

"I've seen reports, and I'm not sure why they do this, but where people will steal the registration and proof of insurance out of a vehicle," Cirillo said.

One of the best deterrents against theft is for neighbors to communicate with each other more and be vigilant about calling in any suspicious activity to police at 574-LMPD.
