LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A former Louisville Metro Housing Authority worker is suing the agency after he says the authority mismanaged millions of dollars.

Matthew Swain said that in April, deputy directors told him that $17 million was unaccounted for in the housing authority’s Section 8 housing funds.

Swain contacted a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development representative to report the missing money. He claims he was suspended without pay and then fired days after talking to the HUD representative.

The lawsuit says this was a wrongful termination.

Swain is suing for lost pay, benefits and punitive damages.

The Louisville Metro Housing Authority issued a statement in response to the lawsuit that was filed.

“We are aware of the lawsuit recently filed by a former Louisville Metro Housing Authority employee. While we cannot discuss the specifics of ongoing legal matters, we want to emphasize that LMHA has engaged in no wrongdoing and will defend itself vigorously against all allegations. Our agency is committed to providing a fair and respectful workplace for all employees, and we will address this issue through the appropriate legal channels. We remain dedicated to upholding our values and ensuring a supportive work environment.”
