I-71 interchange at Exit 20 officially opens in Oldham County
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A new interchange has opened at Exit 20 on Interstate 71 in Oldham County.
The fully directional interchange on I-71 at KY 2857 (La Grange Parkway) between KY 393 and KY 53.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials said it’s designed to enhance connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in the La Grange and Oldham County area.
“We’re pleased to open this new interchange that will carry all vehicle types efficiently and make commutes more manageable for travelers,” KYTC Secretary Jim Gray said.
KYTC awarded the construction contract for the nearly $16 million project, which began back in fall 2022.
An announcement states that this new interchange provides a direct connection to La Grange Parkway and local roadways to the north (Allen Lane/Commerce Parkway) and to the south (New Moody Lane/La Grange Parkway) to improve travel times and enhances safety by addressing high-crash sites along the corridor.
“These ramps are more than just pieces of infrastructure, they represent opportunities,” Oldham County Judge/Executive David Voegele said. “As we celebrate this achievement, let us remember that it’s not just about concrete and steel – it’s about the positive impact these ramps will have on our daily lives and our collective future.”
The new interchange will reportedly help make the KY 53 and KY 393 interchanges less congested, aid in improving emergency response times, and reduce northbound morning queue times onto I-71 at the off-ramp to KY 53.
“This transformative project addresses traffic challenges on a national highway and upgrades infrastructure to support future growth,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. “With this new interchange, we are creating safer, more efficient travel while fostering a stronger, more connected community for Kentuckians.”
The contract for the project was awarded back in August 2022 to Louisville Paving and Construction. KTYC said drivers should still expect minor punch list items to be completed throughout the coming months.
