LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Louisville police have arrested the father of a 3-year-old girl who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Reports of the shooting were made on the morning of Thursday, Nov. 21, in the 5500 block of Overbrook Woods Place. Police said the child, Aubree Goss, had accidentally shot herself. Goss was taken to Norton Children’s Hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Her father, E’Monta Goss, 29, was charged with manslaughter and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. An arrest citation said Goss told police that he loaded and placed the handgun under the couch inside the apartment where the child had access.

He said he fell asleep and woke up to the sound of a gunshot.

“It breaks my heart because I have grandkids,” neighbor Wanda Sadler said. “And I don’t know about the guns, the guns bother me. You know, we have to learn to put them up. Not allow our kids to be able to get them. They don’t understand that this is not a video game.”

Another neighbor, not wanting to be identified, expressed grief over the loss of a young life.

“Just tears started rolling up in my eyes,” they said. “It’s a very sad situation, and it’s one that could have been prevented if people would just lock up their guns.”

On Feb.27, a shooting in the parking lot of the same apartment community left one man dead and three wounded.

“A wild world we live in with these guns,” one neighbor said about the gun violence. “Just people I guess not really caring, and accidents happen, but it’s real unfortunate.”

Goss appeared in court on Friday, Nov. 22 entering a plea of not guilty. His bond was set at $250,000.

He is scheduled to appear back in court on Dec. 2.
