LMPD officers involved in shooting of Southern Indiana wanted suspect identified
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Louisville Metro police have released the names of four officers who were involved in the January 4 shooting that killed a man wanted for shooting of a southern Indiana deputy sheriff.
The officers – detectives Benjamin Derby, Jan Dykes, Robert Ross, and Joshua Trumbo – are all members of the Criminal Interdiction Division.
The detectives were following leads in the search for Austin Schepers, 33. Schepers was wanted for the shooting of Orange County, Indiana deputy Zac Andry during a traffic stop on State Road 56 and U.S. 150 the day before.
According to Indiana State Police, LMPD located Schepers at a home in the 3700 block of Wheeler Ave. LMPD said Schepers fired at detectives and they returned fire, striking and killing him.
On May 17, 2024, one of the four officers, Benjamin Derby, was the officer involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old homicide suspect. That shooting happened around South 3rd Street and Kenton Street. When officers approached the suspect, Brandon Marroquinin, police say Marroquinin flashed a gun at them and tried to run away. Marroquinin was taken to the ground by police and wrestled officers for the gun. Marroquinin’s gun fired once and Derby returned fire.
LMPD said the body worn video from the Schepers shooting will be released with 10 business days. The four detectives have been placed on administrative leave.
