Car crash leads to fire at apartment complex off Westport Road, officials say
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A car crash led to a fire at an apartment complex off Westport Road, according to officials.
Louisville police said around 4:07 p.m. on Dec. 16, officers responded to the report of an injury accident at the intersection of Westport Road and Langdon Drive. Their initial investigation showed two vehicles crashed together in a T-bone fashion, which caused one of the cars to leave the roadway, where it then hit a gas line and crashed into an apartment building.
Police said the building then caught on fire, leading officers to begin evacuating residents. No one inside the apartments was reported injured, and no officers were injured.
St. Matthews Fire Chief Nick Clark thanked the LMPD major who saw the incident and went to the second floor to let people know there was a fire and to get out, and the JCPS officer who later evacuated the LMPD major off the second floor once it became too unsafe to stay.
Clark clarified that no one had to be rescued. Any resident inside the building at the time was notified and then left the apartment.
Crews are still seeing the extent of the damage to the complex, but Clark said the roof of the apartment building collapsed, and both floors experienced heavy damage.
LG&E was on scene to shut the gas off.
Clark said TARC is sending two buses to the apartment to help provide heat and temporary shelter for residents until the Red Cross arrives.
One driver was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the other driver was treated for injuries at the scene, LMPD said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but no charges are expected at this time, according to police.
