WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - As 2026 winds down, the Trump Administration is touting its record on cutting down on illegal immigration into the U.S.
President Donald Trump is claiming that he’s kept his promises on illegal immigration. He’s highlighting a record number of undocumented individuals leaving the country.
“Congratulations, that’s an amazing job,” said the president, presenting Mexican Border Defense Medal to members of the military.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, more than 2.5 million undocumented migrants have left the U.S. since President Trump took office.
According to the agency, DHS enforcement operations have resulted in more than 605,000 deportations. And, according to DHS, 1.9 million undocumented migrants have voluntarily self-deported since January 2025.
President Donald Trump:
“We ended catch and release and we endured and ensured anyone that sets foot across our border illegally is intercepted, arrested and deported, or, if they’re really bad, they’re put into prison because we don’t ever want to take a chance that they’ll come back.”
DHS also claimed that close to 600,000 individuals accused of criminal wrongdoing have been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement through what the Department calls targeted operations.
However, according to Syracuse University’s TRAC immigration database, three out of four current detainees have no criminal convictions
President Donald Trump:
“With the help of our great service members, we’ve stopped the invasion in its tracks and we’re dismantling the cartels very rapidly and they’re being declared enemies of the United States of America.”
Furthermore, Democrats have accused ICE agents of mistakenly detaining and arresting American citizens in their rush to deport as many people as possible in the country illegally.
