Registration, decal renewal now available on demand in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The renewing process is itself being renewed. By the end of the month, clerk offices throughout Kentuckiana will no longer stock pre-printed decals booklets. Instead, renewing will be printed on demand.
"It's going to look different," said Jefferson County Clerk Bobbie Holsclaw.
Holsclaw said the days of the blue and white registration receipts are now numbered. In its place, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is rolling out a more efficient registration process involving less paper.
"We're attaching a big pink sign on there not to throw it out," said Holsclaw.
"The registration certificate is going to be different from now on," said David Summerfield, IT director for the clerk's office. "Instead of getting their license plate decal stapled to the registration certificate, it will actually be part of the document."
"It's no longer going to be that blue and white registration," said Holsclaw. "It's going to be on a regular sheet, white, 8.5 x 11."
For decades, the Jefferson County Clerk's Office has stored copies of nearly two millions registrations here on site. Thanks to the new Print On Demand Decal (PODD) system, that will now change.
"This is replacing all the pieces of paper that you see behind me with electronic records that are much easier and more efficient to access," said Summerfield.
Rolled out at the Motor Vehicle Processing Center on Thursday, the new PODD system allowed real-time registration printing with new tag features.
"They're going to just peel that off and use it," said Holsclaw. "On that decal will be the license plate number. There will no longer be different colors each month."
With no more color-codes to grasp your attention, Holsclaw urged customers pay attention to detail when opening their registrations in the mail.
"I just would like to make sure that they know not to throw that away," began Holsclaw, "because the decal is on there and that is their registration."
While the system is changing, registration fees are not. Old decals will remain valid through their current expiration dates.
The new PODD system is expected to be in place throughout the state, including at area branches by the end of April.
