NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WAVE) - A woman is dead after a shooting in New Albany Saturday morning.

New Albany police said around 5 a.m. officers were called to the 130 block of Village Drive where they found 25-year-old Kaitlyn Lee who had been shot. Lee was taken to University of Louisville Hospital where she later died.

Police took Joshua Thompson, 25, into custody and later charged him with murder.

Thompson and Lee knew each other and had a preexisting relationship, according to police.

The shooting marks three homicides in New Albany in as many months, following the deaths of Sally Samourian in June and Gary Reid weeks later. New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey pointed out that all three of cases involved people with an existing domestic relationship.

“They knew each other and/or lived together in some manner. In my experience these are the most difficult cases to prevent,” he said. “Unlike street crime, these domestic cases are nearly unpredictable. There is no amount of police patrols, for example, that can prevent a case that originates behind closed doors and we had no prior knowledge of.

“The crime rate in New Albany still remains low,” he added. “As you’re aware, our cases have been responded to and resolved quickly. Our Criminal Investigations team works very hard to ensure the cases we face are properly responded to in a timely manner. We will always be committed to providing a safe environment for our community to live, work and play.”

The case remains under investigation.
